What to Eat After a Workout

Many know that eating properly after a workout is important, but not everyone knows why. Namely, when we are working out, our muscles use up the glycogen stores for fuel. Because of that, our muscles become partially free of glycogen and after a workout, our body tries to rebuild these stores of glycogen and then repair and regrow these muscle proteins. This is why it is important to get the right nutrients, so that this process is done in a faster and more efficient way. It is especially important to eat carbs and protein after the workout. But what if you don’t know exactly what you should eat and what amount? Don’t worry, and take a look at the following tips:

Whole eggs

Eggs are a food that probably most people eat after their training, and it’s correct to do so. Eggs are full of protein which is exactly what our bodies need after a good workout. Contrary to popular belief though, it is important to eat whole eggs, not only egg whites. The nutrients found in the yolk, according to a study, allow our muscles to use the high-quality protein in the whites in a more efficient way.

Other sources of protein

However, it is not only eating eggs that will give your body the protein it needs. You can also opt for chicken breasts, another great source of protein. The best idea would be to boil it, but if you detest the idea of eating boiled chicken meat, you can also prepare it in healthy meals. What is good is that you can always find a good source of protein. If you think that you won’t have time to prepare yourself a full meal with protein after a workout, or you simply don’t think it’s time to eat that particular meal at the moment, you can always turn to different protein supplements. Make sure to choose high-quality ones, such as the Bulk Nutrients Future Whey protein which is not only great for your muscles, but also gluten free and lactose free. This type in particular is also fun as it comes in two amazing flavors – Cola and Lemonade.

Salmon

If you like fish, you will be happy to know that it is a great dish to eat after a good workout. The intake of omega-3 fatty acids found in fish such as salmon, sardines and mackerel is great for muscle soreness. Eating fish after a workout also allows the omega-3 cells to work their way into your muscle cells, and they help you in reducing inflammation and pain.

Drink herbal tea

It’s not very often that a guy will turn to tea after a workout, which is definitely not a good idea. Opting for herbal teas after your workout will inject compounds such as phenolic antioxidants in your body. The best tea to drink after a workout is a yerba mate tea. Make it before going to the gym and place it in the fridge for at least 4 hours. Then stir it and add 1 lemon for 1 liter of water. Not only is it tasty, but it will also do wonders for your body. Apart from that, you can also drink a herbal tea before your workout in order to boost your energy levels.

Quinoa

However, if you are on a gluten-free, vegan or vegetarian diet, then it might be a bit more challenging to increase your protein and fiber intake. If this is the case, turn to quinoa, a great little grain that can really do wonders. This is a great addition to any diet, and you can incorporate it in your salads, smoothies or any other meal you are preparing.

Bear in mind that, if you eat all the wrong foods, your workout will not have great results. If you really want to do something spectacular with your body and keep fit, make sure to eat the right stuff and exercise hard. Abs are made in the kitchen, not at the gym, and it is the same with the overall fitness of your body.
